So, has any team ever stayed up after such a bad start?

Not quite as bad , But the Owls lost their first 6 championship games in 2007/8 before winning their 7th.
They finished 16th.

Didn't Sheffield United do something similar in the early 90s? Can speculate forever. Fact is that people wrote us off before and were wrong to do so. They wrote us off before we got promoted, then wrote us off before we stayed up. This time we'll never know as he was sacked and we went down despite having over 80% of the season to pull it around under the new regime. Debating what might have been many years later will achieve nothing.

Maggie and Blair never lost an Election between them either, did they?

Thus are legends born.

Funny, but I always thought that Wellens and Stocky had a big fallout. One had to leave and given that Stocky is SOD's son in law, Wellens left. Our midfield was never the same again.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't know if anyone else has pointed it out - I haven't read the whole thread yet - but it's Hayter who is SOD's son in law.

I haven't seen any marriage certificates so it might be CB. But the story was always that it was James Hayter - if it's true at all!

Sorry if I mislead you all about SOD's son in law.
It's what I thought I read somewhere.

Dr A. L.  Zeimer and I are becoming very good friends nowadays.

He was supported with the biggest budget any manager has had at our club maybe except 'The experiment'. He spent it on quality players but had a very small squad. He got a terrible run of injuries that stopped the squad maintaining it's progress. He then had to mix and match with lower standard cheap signings and very young loans, and he couldn't get the results any more.
He was given a lot of time to turn it around, but it was next to impossible, a treatment room jam packed full, and a patched up team made of loans and youngsters, mixed in with those who were fit.

His period at the club, was my best supporting the club so far. He was sacked at the right time, his run of results without picking anything up meant his job as manager was untenable.
He seemed to do very little scouting judging by the lower cost players he brought in. He did well with the youth loans Jet, Mutch etc.
I think the manager we have, is the first who you think could create something similar for us, he has done well so far, Ferguson also does well with young loan players, what i like about him is the ruthless nature he has shown so far, it was needed, and it's only the start i would think.

I am sure he made comments after the Middlesboro match regarding the future of a number of players and how major changes were required in the summer.
It didn't happen for whatever reason (maybe the experiment was put to him then) a couple of low key signings and never I understood why Woods was first choice keeper.
Was always going to be a struggle that season and injuries in the first few games didn't help
Ryan backing him one day and sacking the next would rankle a bit but it was two wins in 30 odd games which any manager would struggle to keep his job.
We did for a very brief moment look like we might escape the drop under Saunders, around March time after good results against Reading, Southampton and West Ham and got ourselves in contention only to go on to lose a couple of home against sides that were struggling with us.

SOD doesn't seem to have any interest in talking about his time with us except throwing in a few sound bites about how right he was in the end which Is easy to say now,for me he was sacked on performances and results and not really knowing what to do about it ...If he doesn't want to talk about his time with us even after the match that's his prerogative...I will now extend him the same courtesy..

I can't understand why he can't forget the way it ended and be happy with what he achieved, his time with us helped build his reputation.

Again very easy to say now...I never really understood the hatred towards the experiment myself...The reality was we were in a league that we didn't have the money to be competitive in with a fully fit squad let alone one with injuries and lets be honest at that time we looked beat before we ran out on the pitch..So JR tried something different to give us a chance and it failed badly...A lot of experiments do...The end result was probably the same anyway...

The end result was a £2m increase in the wage bill for a succession of f**king awful players.

A stupid, stupid idea that set us back years.

My biggest criticism of SOD is that he never showed any interest in sorting out the defence, specifically centre backs.

The difficulty in the transfer market is finding the 20 goal a season man. We did that.

It didn't take a genius to sign two big fookers at the back. Mills, Shackell and Ward may have been out of our league but Jesus couldn't he have just signed Jones and McCombe? Anything to put some solidity into that team. Instead we had Wayne Thomas, Souza, Naylor or forcing Jimmy into CB and losing him on flanks. Madness. Two big organised lumps would not have broken bank.

And it was not anti-SOD to have lumps rather than John Stones-substitutes playing ball out of back.

None of the centre backs he signed at any stage could do that.

If only he had spent some time on some proper lumps.

As a concept it had some merit, but in reality it was a means of providing outdoor relief to the players on McKay's books that he couldn't place anywhere else.

We ended up with some of the worst players we've had since the Richardson era, only on a lot more money.

why do u think it was such a bad idea bst?  I can't see why it set us back years, and I can't see any problem with the wage bill

The big lad didn't look too bad away at Millwall.

It was the ones allegedly on the books that we never really saw that grated. Plessis? Bamogo? Bakayoko?

Still chuckle now and again at planted story about us giving Diarra a way out of Real Madrid.

Another chapter in the history book!

Bpool

Because after years of careful squad additions/changes, we threw the whole lot away on a mad gamble. So we ended up rebuilding on the hoof in summer 2013. Spectacularly well in the short term but not with the same long term careful squad development we'd had in the 00s.

And the huge increase in the wage bill seems to have had a big effect on the breakdown of trust at Board level that threw us into chaos for two summers.

Yep. One game mind, but that Millwall away match he had a few decent tricks on him.
