Vince Brockie was one of our best. I don't think I ever saw him miss. In other respects he was a fairly average player and he was cursed by knee injuries.

Had there been such things as penalty specialists (like Kickers in American Football) Brockie would probably still be playing.

Was it Dennis Irwin at United, used to take their penalties at one bit.

Best penalty I've ever seen was from a goalkeeper.

Well i thought on another night Marquis would have had a hatrick, missed pen and missed a one on one but a great turn to get into a scoring position. Looks very good in the air won a lot of flick ons, mobile and holds the ball up well. Looks like a fine player to me and will get better as confidence and experience in the team grow. His hold up play with his back to goal is neat, reminds me of one Ian Dearden in his pomp.

He scored at just a bit better than 1in 3 last year, if he does that this year he'll be getting on for 20

Only penaltys along the floor get saved. Get a bit of height on them. Pro's should miss 1 in 10.

Nah, I always tucked mine away low to the goalies right hand post.
I'd always let a good passer take penalties, pick a spot away from keeper and pass it there. Job done, one nil to nudga.

 :chair:I agree
Passed along the floor into the corner Is better than a couple of feet off the floor, perfect height for a goalie

He said in his post match interview he should have done better with his chances. That's shows he's hungry and not satisfied with scoring the odd goal.

He also commented on his workrate and how he hopes other players feed off it. Thinks he and Williams make a good combination.

Hope we see much the same on Saturday to show we're progressing in the right direction.

Somebody even compared him to Curtis Main which I cant see myself Marquis can get into the positions better but probably isn't as good a finisher...Talking of Curtis, the fans are none too impressed with him so far..They haven't had a good start even though they are favourites and are already calling for Cooks head...And we thought we had problems..lol

The natives of hawaii, called for cook's head way back, problem is they got it!.

Ram them into the roof of the net.

I'd far rather someone put some welly behind it than those half-hearted passes 3 feet off the ground halfway across the goal. Robinson at Fulham, Marquis this week and Williams last weekend. Terrible penalties. If you're going to pass it then you should be able to find the corner like McIndoe, Stock etc. If you can't pass to a particular spot from 12 yards then you shouldn't be playing professional football.

Anything over about 4 foot high with a clean contact and its guaranteed to go in.

However if you out-phsych the keeper and he goes the wrong way, its's seen as an easy penalty..

However I agree, go for the corner or the top of the net or down the middle, but either way hit it with some welly!!

Not sure whether League Two players can "out-psyche" a keeper! The best people I've seen at fooling the keeper are Matt Le Tissier and anyone facing Joe Hart.

That's why you practice, until you can do it with your eyes shut. It's not a terribly difficult skill and is something every professional footballer should be capable of.

The point I was making is that when the keeper guesses right, it's a crap penalty.  When he guesses wrong and it's a tame shot but still scores, it's "cool" or "easy" or "safe" etc.

Of course, the ideal is to give the keeper no chance, which I agree with totally!

Thing is, both of our penalties this season have had no better than 50/50 chance of going in. Where they have been placed, any professional keeper would stop them if he guesses the right way. That's really not good enough by the penalty takers. You've got to put the ball somewhere where the keeper has to guess the right way AND make a very good save.

I find it hard to believe that professional strikers can't hit a ball into an 12inch radius hole from 12 yards at moderate pace. That's all you need to do to score 9 out of 10 penalties.

Agreed BST. If you're taking a penalty just hoping the keeper will go the wrong way, then someone else should take the next one.

IDM - I'm not sure how many people think a penalty like that is "cool" or "easy" or "safe", I think people are just happy to have scored so their focus is on that rather than the fact that it was a poor penalty. I've seen several penalties when a few minutes later I've said to my mates/they've said to me "lucky the keeper guessed wrong, that was a poor penalty".

I agree with you...

I was thinking more what a commentator says on tv etc where so-and-so striker "calmly slots away" or "coolly finishes" a  penalty, which, as BST rightly says, would only be a 50/50 if the keeper guesses the right way.

My comparison is about how that can be the perception, against what is an easy save when the keeper guesses correctly.

The side of the net has a massive area.  If a penalty hits this part of the net (at pace) then the keeper has little chance - and its a big area to aim at!

Yep, we are all experts aren't we.
I too took a fair few penalties over the years but they were only easy once they had gone in.

As for L2 players not being able to out psych keepers, well they are L2 keepers as well.

Penalties are an easy goal when everything is going for you, when it's not the keeper seems to grow in size, and the goal shrinks. Professionals are similar to amateurs, that confidence plays a part.

If you find me a video of a penalty that is hit over 4ft high, on target, in a league game being saved you can have your money back.

It's too high. Keepers always dive low. Never see high penaltys saved. By the way I never missed one in a game!!
