What about "five year plan to be a sustainable Championship club" says to people "we're going to spend as much money as possible trying to get promoted there immediately and keep spunking money on it til it works"?

Throwing money on it 'til it works is no way to come sustainable?
Spending money sensibly is the way forward.

Genuine point, going up straight away could be a disaster, it would potentially be too much too quick. I would be happy with a good season challenging ready to go next year.

I would love promotion but don't want it if we aren't ready.

We will be ready. Off field progress has been incredible in the last couple of years.

I don't see how any club can be sustainable on the Championship without spending a lot of money.

Don't count McSheffery out as being a "signing"

The Barnsley way? Sign young players and sell them on for profit.

Which we don't do.

And they're hardly established.

If we did you would probably lambast the board for signing unproven players and / or turning us into a selling club!

I'm sure we could have sold Marquis for a tidy profit, but instead we've given him a new 3 year contract.

We've signed Mason, Lawlor, Marosi, McCullough, Wright, Garratt and Kiwomya - all under 24 and any of which could be sold off for profit. The potential to be a club like that is there. For a club our size this is what we should be aiming for, anyone who wants us our owners to cough up for million pound signings every pre-season needs a reality check.

But to be an established Championship club, you have to be able to spend money on players.

Which we'd do from selling players on? How is this hard? Sign players young, develop them and hopefully sell them for big profit then reinvest that money into the team and infrastructure.

Well I think we are now just 2 players short of a very competitive squad for this league. CB needed and hopefully Jordan Houghton.
Any more would be a bonus.
My glass is half full unlike Mr Frost whose glass is permanently empty.

I'd expect us to have a mid-table budget. The manager has to be really careful how he uses it some players we just won't get because some other club offers a bigger wage. For some time now we have been looking at younger players on loan and permanent and looking at non league for future big players with one or two experienced players. It would be good if it was all sorted now but i suspect the players we are after their clubs haven't decided yet if they will be retained for the club they play for's squad or if they get loaned out.
I suspect the manager will have a point to prove in this league after our relegation so he will want to get exactly what he's looking for. There isn't much room for mistakes in the transfer market for us so i understand him waiting for the right ones. He hasn't let us down much on signings i have faith he will get the right people in.

I wonder if the sad event this week will have a long term effect on the Budget?

Looks like if ferguson  goes for  a defender it might mean losing Houghton. .? Where short on players so if the budget is good , I personally would like both ? Think it would be foolish to not sign Houghton,  but we need a dominant defender.

I don't think we are short on players if I'm honest, we just have a few injuries.

As soon as baudry and McCullough are fit we will have a very good starting 11 and a stronger looking bench.

No point in buying players to cover us for a few weeks

Would you rather us just sign any random free agent then just to satisfy you and make sure we've got players in before preseason because we've missed out on targets for various reasons? and they're not all money reasons either.

I don't like the expression-getting bodies in. When a manager says that it usually means he is getting somebody he wasn't that bothered about signing. If it means waiting for the right one's and patching the side up for a game or two-so be it.

The amount players to choose from runs into the 1000s . Blackpool got promotion to the Premier League using more than 20 loan players in a season . Extrapolate of this what you may but I say DF is not waiting but being told to wait.
