Let's talk about the Southend Game
« on July 28, 2018, 10:35:42 am by selby »
Well folks it's back, a whole new season in front of us, and in some cases the knives are already out, or is it just that as supporters we want so badly for our team to do well.
Last night seems to have divided opinions on whether we can make our mark this season, the first half showing lots of promise, and a second half when we carried on where we left off last season, looking like we could not score in the open end of a paper bag.
All guess work, meaningless stuff, that just helps to wet the appetite for the real thing. And a Possibility that we may have a couple of new players before next Saturday ( only a wish on my part ).
I think we all think that the team that started last night will provide the bulk of the team at Southend, and I hope Crawford is fit to play, he can be a big player for us if he can keep fit.
My preference would be for McCullough to come in alongside Blair or Whiteman, as both those two playing together are prone to giving the ball away, and I think McCullough is a better player in possession.
The other big question to me is Amos or Andrew, Andrew not looking quite up to speed yet to me.
Other than that I  think the main  interest will  be on the subs bench.
  What do you think?
Are we likely to see any new signings this week?
Are you like me going to the game?
Can we get off to a decent start to the season?
Will we play the attacking formation we saw last night in away games?
What are your hopes for the coming season?
Please discuss, and all the best to everyone for the coming season.

I'm looking forward to it, I will be going as well so ticking off another ground.

Rowe for Crawford if he is fit, and Crawford isn't, Andrew for Amos otherwise I'd expect the same team that started last night to start at Southend.

I would agree with that. It is a tight call between Amos and Andrew and as you say, Andrew is not up to full speed yet but Amos can hold his own and delivers a lovely cross.

Shame about Crawford but Tommy Rowe needs to grab his chance as he shouldn't be an automatic choice for me. Another who's coming back from injury and should have more in the tank.

Good to see more efforts on goal in the first half, we just need some to go in now. Might have a punt on Wilks being the first goalscorer!

Rowe is our best player, has to be an automatic choice.

It's about opinions. He should be our best player but I don't think he's giving as much as he's capable of. I'll give him the benefit of doubt due to his injury. He gave the ball away too cheaply at times last night for a player of his stature.

A good game spoiled by our lack of conversion of the many chances created . With the loss now of what seems a decent player in Ali Crawford has puts the team back to where it was last season by not having a proactive midfielder who can thread passes. I’m content that we can compete , but for me , Marquis has step up and lead from the front and demand better service , I felt we don’t feed enough passes into him with any aquality .

The midfield is the biggest problem as it was last season and why because apart injured Crawford it’s the same players. GM may get more out of players some believe he will, but he will have to.
For me if Crawford is not ready then it’s Rowe if fit plus two more. McCollough to slow, Whiteman needs to improve a lot, Blair not a midfield 3 player and should be no where near first eleven.
So this part of the team still needs strengthening if we are to get any where near top six the goal.

How can people say tommy Rowe isn’t first choice????? He’s by far our best player on his day and as played out of position last 2 seasons ??

On his day. It's about opinions based on what people have seen. Whether he's been out of position, or injured, or both, he's capable of a better contribution.

Lawlor

Mason Wright butler Andrew

 Crawford  Whiteman   rowe

Wilks marquis copps

Probably our best team currently in my opinion, we all have our favs and obviously some may be injured (Crawford poss)

Southend drew their game at Leyton Orient today 2  2. We may be up against our old friend Theo Robinson, and  although fancied to be up there this season, their supporters have been underwhelmed by their teams preseason form, and a lack of pace being noted by the fans.
The game at Leyton got a bit feisty, and was a physical game by all accounts.
Cox was the main spearhead of the attack, so will have to be watched, but their goalkeeper got injured in a clash, and was substituted.
It could be a hard game next week.

Hopefully Crawford will be fit if he is I would go with
Lawlor
Mason Wright Butler Andrew
Crawford McCullough Rowe
Coppinger Marquis Wilks

If crawford isn’t then probably swap him for Blair

I'd go with:

Lawlor/Marosi
Mason Wright Butler Andrew
Whiteman McCullough Rowe
Copps Marquis Beestin

If we start with Crawford Rowe and Whitman thats three attacking mids, we need a defensive one in there. Keeper i wouldn't mind, think they're both as good as each other. Back 4 picks itself. Wilks as an impact player to start with. Would consider Crawford for Whiteman if he's fit

                 Lawlor
  Mason Wright Butler Andrew
               McCullough
      Whiteman*    Rowe
        Copps Marquis Wilks

*Assuming Crawford is injured otherwise I would start Crawford.

When GM did his first interview he spoke about starting the season quickly and so im expecting a fast start at Southend. 3-1 Rovers.

Whiteman played the defensive midfield role 1st half against Sheff U.
So may be GM sees him in that role either as 1st choice or as back up to McCullough?
I would be tempted to start both Whiteman and McCullough against Southend. My team assuming Crawford is injured would be :
Goal. Lawler
BF. Mason, Wright, Butler, Andrews.
MF  Whiteman, McCullough, Rowe,
                     Coppinger
ST.          Wilks,          Marquis.

Subs: Marosi, Anderson, Amos, Blair, Taylor, Beestin, May.

Come on the Rovers let’s get on the front foot from the start and make a positive start. I would take a draw but I think this is a winnable game as every game is! Positive thinking and belief goes an awful long way.

Bang on my selection Dare to dream. I would have Copps behind the strikers though.
Not got pace to play wide. Need his guile to open up opposition defence.

If we need pace out wide we can bring on Blair and or Beestin.

Truly heartening to see we are seemingly asking our full backs to actually play as full backs. This is marvellous news. Well done McCann.

Quite a lot of optimism too considering that many posters think we are short of players.

Whiteman for Crawford if he is not fit, and  Amos has  impressed more than Andrew in pre season, but away from home, and experience makes me go for Andrew.
  Subs.
Lawlor, Whiteman, Kiwomya ( if Fit ) Anderson,  Beestin,  Blair, Amos
Lawlor covers goalkeeper, Whiteman Defensive and attacking midfield,  Anderson central defence,  Blair covers the right side, Amos the left,  Kiwomya  the wide attacking areas and central attack,  Beestin attacking midfield.  May in for Kiwomya if he is not fit, Ben Khemis in as a substitute if Whiteman has to start for Crawford, and he is of course fit.

To be fair to Theo he scored six in six, at the end of the season last year. Not too shabby.

If he plays, Chris, it's stitched on he'll score.
