I agree
A simple observation on how well he turned out fortunes around initially didn’t need 40 odd comments about it

“initially”

In the “initial” 1/10000000000 of a second I was ahead of Usain Bolt.

You’re a bit of an odd ball
We’re discussing initially because he only has 17 games left this season

A Fergie team Just take good look at what sh*** we had to put in the shirt ! (Butler excluded) !!
Stuckmann
Alcock
McCullough
Butler
Taylor-Sinclair
Evina
Grant
Middleton
Keegan

The three subs who came on were

That was the team that played against Stoke.
Ferguson decided that he wasn’t going to bring anyone else in during the January window and as a result of that decision he took us down.

f**k me can we lock this thread, all this has been done to death.

Yeah the same crap is spouted over and over. Yeah, he gave some crap players contract but a lot of managers do, including Guardiola and Ferguson Snr. Yeah, promotion was expected when we went down but it's a lot harder to do it then just say it, we've seen the amount of teams that go down there and get stuck or go down even further. The club and Ferguson did brilliant to get back up at first opportunity and that was the main objective. Some of you clearly don't like him but please don't let him ruin your night's sleep.

Of course it was. That was the first Saturday of the transfer window. The point was that he made some baffling additions to the squad that January and we bombed.

All this shows is how much better off we were when he left than when he took over.
That’s a terrible side.

[/quote?

Think we signed Mattioni, Rowe and Alcock that window. So not all were baffling

The first game Tommy Rowe played for Rovers was 19 March 2016 (a 1-2 defeat at home to Peterborough United).

The first game Felipe Mattioni played for Rovers was 7 November 2015 (a 2-0 win at home to Stalybridge in the FA Cup).

The first game Craig Alcock played for Rovers was 14 November 2015 (0-2 defeat at home to Blackpool).

Neither Rowe, Mattioni or Alcock were signed in the January 2016 window.

The vitriol aimed at Ferguson at the recent match shows how many Rovers fans were glad to see the back of him, not just a few was it.

His January signings were :
Lynden Gooch
Eddy Lecygne
Renewal of loan of Cameron Stewart.

Baffling.

It was that window's dealings that effectively sent us down. He signed better players in March (Rowe, McSheffrey, Matthews) but the damage was done by then.

Yeah BST, some people post things which aren’t true to back DF up and hope that no one will check to see if it is factual.

I don't think many folk deliberately post untrue stuff. I think many of us post stuff we'd like to be true and don't check it carefully. But there's an internet out there and if you're careful, it's not hard to check.

Didn't we sign Chris Neal that January too?

To be fair to Dickos - Mattioni, Rowe and Alcock were all still Fergie signings. The loan window was a different proposition back then.

Stuckmann was fine, until he got injured, never seemed to be as good after that.Williams seemed to lose confidence and struggled under Fergie.

Yes we did. Forgot about him. That was because Stuckmann was injured, not from strategic choice.

And yes, Ferguson DID make some excellent signings. But the point is that he f**ked up royally in that January window. His advocates on here are quite rightly pointing out that he inherited a bag of w**k. But the point is that HE didn't seem to appreciate how bad the squad was. In January 2016, he signed a few kids that, I'm guessing, he planned to run the rule over for future investment. So when the squad dived into the second worst run of form that any of us have ever experienced, we had nothing to fall back on until the loan window opened. And by then it was too late. The rot was too deep.

It was a very, very big strategic miscalculation and I'm still astonished that he survived that failure. The fact that the club stood by him then puts an interesting angle on the fact that he flounced out a couple of years later. The long-term support thing was, apparently, a one-way thing.

Riccardo Calder was another one - must be one of the worst signings in recent times. Still can’t believe we got him back the following year.

This is a sensible, even-handed and calm analysis.

I can’t see how the signing of those three players was the downfall of our season.
It was more to do with having players like chaplow, Taylor Sinclair, Williams, Stuckmann all on big big wages. Leaving us with nothing available to spend without getting rid of some.
That squad that started the season was abysmal and the wage bill was bigger than it is now. unbelievable really

We didn't have a recognised right back either, did we? Dickov thought Luke "QE2" McCullough would suffice there.

Dickos
But miraculously, we found money to sign Rowe, McSheffrey and Matthews in March.

Sometimes you need to put your hand up and admit that you're arguing against the facts.
