Downing Punishment
« on February 18, 2019, 02:07:25 am by ScrumpyCPFC »
So there has been cases this year when players have been punished because they have "deceived the referee" by diving to win a penalty. Does it work the other way round? For example Downing pretending it hit his face when it clearly his arm?

Nope.   You cant give handball for a sliding block.  There would be 10 penalties a game.  The ref had a good view of it too.

And you can see Mike Dean clearly telling the palace players, that he had slid past the ball,

Cheating? How dare you! He only had his head in his hands because he was devastated at the prospect he might have accidentally given away a penalty.

yes you can it’s down to the ref as whether he think his arms are in a natural position

It was ball to hand, not hand to ball. His hand was in a natural position for his slide. No penalty for me.

I can see both sides of the argument but I would not have been surprised to see a penalty given..

As for holding his face, there was no need for that..

Not for me, ball to hand, there was no deliberate attempt to handle it, having said that we’ve seen them given far too often

I felt that it was a clear penalty at the time and having seen it again on TV, my opinion is the same.   His hand/arm is on the ground and outstretched which must surely be an unnatural position?  He is also moving towards the ball, so it is “hand to ball”.  I don’t think that it’s a valid argument to say that he was sliding, just the same as if his arm was in the air if he were jumping.

If this had been the other way round, we would definitely have wanted a penalty.

If you try sliding on the ground POD, are your arms fixed down by your sides? If so, it must be rather painful.

Never a penalty, that.

I was reading this thread and was going to post exactly what RA has already done.
No penalty.

No I read it as he was reacting to giving a penalty away  and just showing his wasn’t feelings , I assume he was surprised that it wasn’t.

As an aside, what a rock-solid central defensive partnership Downing and Anderson are becoming and both seem very comfortable on the ball and can pick a pass. Must try and get Downing on a permanent (I'm sure he's out of contract this summer). With Butler and Wright waiting in the wings, we seem blessed at the moment in those positions.

From a conservation of momentum point of view, it's nigh on impossible to throw yourself into a sliding tackle without an arm going above your head.

Look at these.

Mind, I'd have been screaming for a penalty at the other end, but it's not a clear cut one either way.

If it was down the other end I'd have been screaming for a penalty, nailed on. And I think most others on here would be with me too

Bobbymax, Having watched Blackburn Rovers centre back pairing  earlier on Sky, I would suggest Blackburn will want Downing back & put in a bid for Anderson. Both the Rovers centre backs were outstanding yesterday, but then again they were only marking somebody valued at £30 million plus.

It was a bit silly to hold his face - we don’t need that..

I said to my lad at the time, the fact he was holding his face made it obvious it hit his hand!

I think the fact it hit his hand made it obvious it had hit his hand.

They’re given all the time for situations like this. Handball is another rule similar to offside where nobody knows the actual rule, as there’s no consistency in decisions

the rules are simple if you know them

Downing did not handle the ball deliberately (and I've seen no-one suggest otheriwse), therefore it's not a penalty. Simple.

He put his arm down to steady his fall, but his body slid away from his arm and left it on the flaw, he never moved his arm or lifted it to stop the ball so how can it be a penalty

Depends on the ref’s view as it happens in real time..  the ref was nearby and the Palace players didn’t protest too much so he must have explained.?

However if the ref has a slightly different viewing able he could have easily given the penalty.  One watching real time I thought it was going to be given.
