Opportunity missed
« on February 23, 2019, 03:22:05 pm by NickDRFC »
Not a bad result in isolation, local derby and Scunny are an improved side recently but extremely disappointing given we were seemingly in complete control. Someone in the lucky pint said the players should be shot if we didn’t win - hyperbole I’m sure but seems to suggest how dominant we were. Complacency in the second half?

A win would have really embedded us into the playoffs but as it is we’re currently sitting in 7th. Hope we can dust ourselves off and improve on Tuesday.

We have to look at it over the final third of the season and we are top six material and have 14 games to show it still.

Very poor second half.seemed to lose it in midfield.cannot understand why we pack the goal when we defend free kicks.at least leaving one person up wil bring back two of theirs.

I said that. Up until 50-odd minutes, it was a catch-weight contest. Bigger gulf in quality between the two sides than last Sunday.

Maybe it wasn't possible to keep playing as crisply as we were.

Have to say there were two shockingly bad misses by the officials. McGahey should have gone for that kick at Wilks's head. Only made glancing contact thank God but it was a ridiculously dangerous thing to do. Wilks was making him look a fool and the lad lost it. Swung a boot towards the ball after he'd wrestled Wilks to the floor, but Wilks's head was in the way. If his head had been two inches higher, that would have been a very, very bad injury.

Then the penalty in the second half. Stonewaller from what I saw of it. The defender has thrown an arm up, not because of a reaction to his movement, and the arm has blocked the shot.

We were atrocious 2nd half. Proper guff. No idea what happened. Really took the shine off what was an outstanding 1st half from us - we got drawn into playing Scunny's brand of hoofball and I have no idea why.

Don't think anyone comes out of that second half with much credit other than Whiteman and the two CB's (even allowing for their goal to come from a deep cross).

First half we were a class above, winning all the 1v1's through the middle and Wilkes causing chaos down the right. Don't even think Scunny changed much to get a point, we just stopped doing what we had done well.

Don't want to go too negative (especially with other results going our way atm) but our composure and decision making was shocking for the last 20 minutes.

We slowly drifted from very comfortable to not very conformable at all. I would have liked McCann to have been more proactive in his substitutions. Each one made 10 minutes too late.

Something about Rovers in the last 2 games, we seem to be weirdly in 'autopilot' and not playing to our very full potential.

Their #22 was a serial offender too. Booked in the first half but went on to commit at least three more yellow worthy offences.

Autopilot sums it up perfectly I think. We lost focus when we should have kept at them. It was like the sitter than Marquis missed put us right off our stride. It shouldn't have. There's some work to do there to keep focused for the full 90+. It was a weird game.

Too many of ours just not chasing the second ball and missing opportunities ( Marquis) roll on Tuesday!

Missed our chance to kill the game off first half and gradually it got away from us. They got back into it 2nd half but not by playing any football - they were just tonking it forward and a few started to drop for them. If you throw enough shit at the wall some of it might stick eventually.

It was a fair result though really because we got nowhere near the levels we'd set in the first half. 2nd half our pressing was off, we didn't pass it well, and didn't create as much.

Still, a point on the road isn't a disaster if we can keep up our decent home form. Other results haven't gone too badly elsewhere either.

Definitely a goal keeper error for Scunny's goal. Said it before but Marosi has a hard time commanding his box. He actually started to come for the cross, which he could've got to IMO, but he changed his mind and then was all out of shape.

Marosi does not come for the ball he can panic and he should not be given another contract. We need a better No1 for next season with Lawlor as the back up.

Didn’t see why he made the subs today. Wilkes and Copps were outstanding first half. No need to take them off.

To be fair I think Smith looked bright in place of Wilks who had faded out of the game by that point. Sadlier offered nothing though.

Great save from Marko before the goal or do we only speak of the ones he concedes?

The blame for the goal lies with the lack of communication. Neither Downing nor Blair challenged and the ball dropped between them as both thought the other one would cover it, Marosi started to come for it then backed off, possibly putting the defenders off.

We need to sort the Mason situation out and pronto, there is no denying he is the best RB we have. Blair would be better employed on the right of midfield.

Yes he is a reaction keeper but when he has to be proactive and take pressure off the team he is very limited we need better.

He does put defenders off because he does not come and when he does it’s a panic decision.

After the goal I noticed Downing having a go at Blair.
Looking at the highlights it appears to me that Downing left the ball, probably as a result of Blair giving him a shout to leave it.
Their player got to the ball ahead of Blair.

Blair shouted, Downing left it, then he committed the cardinal sin of waiting for the ball. The attacker just ran in front of him and headed it in. Both Downing and Marosi gave Blair an ear full, he held his hands up but not good enough.

GM said in his post match interview (Radio Sheffield) that Wilks had been suffering a dead leg and brought him off as a precaution.

Wilks was kicked from pillar to post during the match and not given enough protection from the ref.

The ref didn't give us enough overall. Some of these refs cant keep up with our technical players, twisting and turning.
