Who was the only player (Rovers related) to play in the FA Cup Final for one team and appear in the Football League for another team only a week later?

Peter Doherty? Either 1946 or maybe 1933 Irish Cup final, with Glentoran?

There can't be many seasons where the League has still been going after the FA Cup Final. I was wondering about wartime? Flicking through Tony Bluff's book now but its not helping...

Man. He was a Donny Rovers player, although he wasn't playing for Rovers when he achieved this feat.

No. Note that he played for one club in the Final and a different one a week later, so it pre-dates Transfer Deadlines, Windows etc.

The FA Cup Final as the end of the domestic season is a fairly recent thing. As recently as the 70s League matches were played after the Final, although these tended to be re-arranged games.

It must have been a player that was loaned to a cup final team who then went back to his “main “ club. When did the loan system start  ?

I was thinking along those lines before TRB said it pre-dated transfer deadlines, and I have a feeling loans are reasonably recent as well, I don’t remember them in the early 1960’s.

Correct. Well done. For a bonus point, can you name the former Rovers player who played on the opposing side in the 1939 FA Cup Final and scored two goals?

Brilliant questions TRB.

Easy to look up the latter answer so I will leave that to others.

Could that be Chris Balderstone? I seem to recall he played for the Rovers and also in a first class County Cricket match on the same day?

Yes, always tickled me that one. He played for Leicestershire at Chesterfield that day and ended the day batting 'not out', travelled up to play the match and resumed his innings the next day to complete a century I think!

Ted Helmsley was also a cricketer but I don't think he played both sports while with us. (although I seem to recall he played a pre season friendly after playing cricket that day??)

My dad was at both games! I don't recall the Ted Hemsley one. I'll have a look into that.

Given that we've got onto footballer-cricketers, there are four players who have appeared for Rovers in the Football League and have also played first-class cricket. Chris Balderstone and Ted Hemsley are two. Can you name the other two?

I'm pretty sure I was at a game at BV where he came on as sub. PS I was at the Balderstone (Rovers) match.
