If we, a League 1 club who will only be able to attract League 1 players rather than world class stars, decide to appoint a Director of Football and a Head Coach - which one of these decides which players we are to sign and what tacital formation we will play?

If this is not to be the Director of Football - then what will they be doing all week?

A Director of football would decide on a style of football and would be responsible for identifying players to suit that objective. The director of football would have input on how players are trained right across the club. Youth teams and all.

Of course whilst a coach is in position, I'd expect it to be a collaborative process.

The team coach would be responsible for the day to day running of things, training, selecting a team on the match days, formations. All the detail.

So the head coach would be responsible for players he had no input into choosing?

And the director of football would have nothing to do once the transfer window has closed. How much would he be on exactly?

Sorry its not a model for League 1 clubs.

Not disagreeing with you generally but maybe the DoF could negotiate contract extensions in good time before they run so low, that would keep them busy outside transfer windows? Although we could have done that if not for Moore apparently. Importantly i don't think the club should be run by individual whims which is what it sounds like with Moores decisions

Personally i think we're too small to have the DoF route in league 1. But it has some merit in that should a head coach leave the wheels don't fall off the whole clubs as it has here. Worry is that if your DoF is useless and keeps signing rubbish the manager tends to get sacked

I wouldn't say the head coach would have no input but in the end the DoF is the architect and the head coach chief engineer.

It maybe too much of an extravagance for a L1 club, after all we wouldn't get away with paying a head coach less than a manager. but if the manager is going to be leaving every season it does give continuity and it might mean a situation like we have now would not arise. You'd expect a DoF to have potential coaches lined up for interview straight away.

And what else could they do to try and ensure a potential promotion season doesn't come off the rails because a bigger club takes the manager halfway through the season?

Gavin Baldwin.....

Why on earth people think he’s great is a joke... attendances have nearly halved whilst he’s been here.   We’re in league 1 still, so not progressed one bit, no progression with the youth team whatsoever, managers and decent players leave at the drop of a hat.... that’s fact...

Last season average League 1 att.: 8297
Year in Champ before Gavin (2010): 10258
Gavin's first season in Champ (2011): 9341

The rest of your thinking is equally b*llocks. Try doing some maths, then do us a favour and stick the pencil in your eye.

You are hands down the greatest slimey f**kwit on here.

Yes but if it is the DoF who is making most of the decisions - he will be getting most of the credit. So what is to stop him leaving?

And that is where this will always fall down for a League 1 club. Whoever does well here will get noticed by someone higher up the pyramid - and leave. We have to accept that I am afraid...

...and have a better process to replace them!!!

You find a DoF who is an older man, not wanting the day to day work of management.

I wonder how many L1/Championship clubs would be actively looking for a DoF? Most don't use this system.

No solution is ideal I grant you.

How do they improve the current system? New managers tend to arrive with their own staff, want to change things, want new players and require time to make it all work.

We've lost about 2000 fans. Not half though!

Second time in the championship we had another 1000 available seats in the away end which puts that figure up.

A pretty poor process that’s got us in the state we are currently!

It’s so obvious that we need a director of football, someone that will stick around! There’s no consistency at all. Change of manager and squad overhaul year on year. It’s tedious!

You can't blame the recruitment process for hiring managers who are headhunted by higher up clubs.

Can’t see butler being head hunted can you?

Go on, then, tell us what you want - the board to appoint another talented manager who will attract attention from other clubs, or a mediocre one who won't?

Just show some bottle and do more to keep hold of one

Of course. Why didn’t the board think of that? It seems so easy...

Yes that’s it!

What other suggestions is there to this? Keep letting managers leave without a fight or attempt? Back to square one year on year? It’s not working is it... questions need to be asked of the board rather then just hanging on their every word.

It’s not good enough and you don’t see such turnover of managers at any other club. And I can assure you this forum is not a true cross section of the fans opinion.

Because everyone knows an employee who doesn't really want to be at his job is super productive and effective in the workplace and never causes any issues.

At other clubs? Wednesdays have just had 4 in one season.

Someone with International coaching on their CV? Gary Johnson?

Chris Coleman?

Coleman has popped up on the bookies radar, so perhaps it's him.

I can't help but think he's a fella looking for a stepping stone back to a higher level.

Coleman would get a better job than this if he wanted one surely.

That's the name I immediately thought of and it sent a shudder down my spine!

However his recent international experience would appeal with working with and having access to young talent.

As said though could easily be Coleman or Jones....or O'Driscoll ??

Graeme Jones was my first thought as well. While I know the reports are deliberately vague at this point it did say international coaching, not management.
