What makes you say that?

I don’t have the benefit of interviewing the candidates so I will leave it to those who can.

However, I’ve never really bought into the idea that a mean, nasty, ‘winner’ of a player (such as Wellens, who was superb in a once in a lifetime midfield)  is what’s required to get a never-say-die attitude amongst a playing squad.

I remember Alan Ball bringing his young Blackpool side to B V in a cup tie. They went one up and Ball was constantly, as player manager,  in the ear of every player on his side for every second. But instead of digging in and fighting you could see his player’s heads going down and some players didn’t want the ball because they knew they were in for a mother of all bollockings when they weren’t capable of doing what Ball would have been able to do in his prime. They lost 2-1.

Still, as a few have said I’m sure Wellens will have learned in his management roles to date. Whoever is chosen gets my full support.

Entered my head at time of posting my comments. I don’t want Wellens at all.

Much as he was a great player for us, I wouldn’t trust Wellens as far as I could throw him. I imagine he had to eat some of John Ryan’s fdmous “humble pie” in his interview...

Of course he can be described as a legend,
Copps is a freak, there aren’t many clubs that have players like him.
It doesn’t mean anyone else who doesn’t live upto that can’t be described as a legend.
We’ve plenty of them, and wellens for me is definitely one of them along with people like tierney, blundell, mcindoe, stock, etc etc
He Wellens could have been a legend but he pissed off when he knew the big money men failed to take over the club so that makes him a back stabbed not a legend

I’m not sure which occasion you mean?
He didn’t leave when the takeover fell through he was just lined up by them to sign of it went through but when it didn’t there was no offer of a contract for him.

If we're all talking about the same attempted takeover, I think he said in the Copps podcast he was offered a 3 year deal if the takeover went through, but when it collapsed they could only offer him a short-term deal. He signed that but then did almost leave for Watford (or was it QPR?) at the end of that contract until Rovers did finally offer him his 3 years. He didn't see out that contract though as Ferguson got rid pretty quickly after getting the manager's job.

Just his side of the story, mind, but thought it would be worth putting out there for those that haven't heard it.

Thanks for the updates SM, i know you can be a scapegoat when it comes to any critiscism of the club but is good to get some inside info from time to time. The piece by Hoden was brilliant too to better understand what the hell went off this season.

It's always a case of shooting the messenger though Fal. Something I have got used to.

But not for much longer, I'll be stepping down this year.

Are you going to Hull City or Sheffield Wednesday?  :silly:

Have the interviews been concluded as expected then? I'd imagine the board know who our man is by now and are well into thrashing the personal terms out?

I don't want to divert this thread with discussion about me, but thanks for the kind words. I'll communicate better at a later stage.

By this hour I’d have expected a monumental shift in the betting market to reflect a decision, even if the announcement isn’t yet ready. But nothing yet. Things have been kept well under wraps throughout.

Sequentia was in 13-14 in the Championship
LT and JR was in 14-15 in League One

RW signed in the summer before 13-14, Fergie joined in 14-15 and RW then left.

I’m sure Wellens explained the reason fo leaving in the podcast with Copps.

Something about Fergie meeting with him and Copps about wanting to lower the average age and wanting one of them to go, which RW decided it was him to leave over the two of them?
