Just to add, I’m not knocking the lad at all. It could have been worse. It’s the processes behind the signing that are the bigger issue.

Best of luck to him.

I think its no coincidence our recruitment has been poor since we started employing 'talent identification managers' personally

Totally agree James, it must be one of the easiest jobs in football, going around different grounds/matches “talent spotting “

Probably one of the easiest to do, but the hardest to do right. Look at all the money in the Premier League then laugh at the signings Arsenal have made.
Signed a centre half who can’t win a header for £50m, then gave a walking red card who can’t pass water a big new contract. Just shows how difficult it is, even when you’ve got the funds!

Apparently, Wednesday, Rotherham and Ipswich were interested three months ago.....

All we can do is support him now as we did with Bogle until he decided to stop trying.

If Wigan did offer him a contract that's hopefully a good sign

https://www.wiganhub.co.uk/2021/05/27/wigan-athletic-offer-new-contracts-to-nine-first-team-players/
Notice they didn’t offer Gardner a contract, how long did he sign on for us?

One year. Get the feeling that one was a pretty desperate need for bodies. I doubt he’ll be here next season.
Thanks. Looks a bit 2-dimensional but hope he proves me wrong!

I meant to say, that I'd hope rovers still keep a number 9 option open for the Jan transfer window
The only chance of that will be a loan I believe.

It’s got to be a remake of the song by the Police for a tune for him surely. The chorus has literally got his name all over it.
Do-do-do-do da-da-da -da is all I want to say to you …….

I think his CV is decent and given the correct backing from the manager and the fans, I think he could be a great signing.

Hopefully starts vs. them lot tomorrow in Mickey Mouse Cup and will be match fit and raring to go against his old club on Saturday.

Welcome to Rovers, JD. All the best.

Liam Hoden is saying that Dodoo will start and get 45-60 minutes. Hiwula also set to play some part. This is positive to hear.

What do people expect?

Free agents are all we can sign, there’s reasons why they are free agents, give the lad a chance!

Just because a player is a free agent doesn't mean he isn't any good
His last club offered him a contract but he chose to leave. He is a free agent by choice thus giving himself the opportunity to negotiate his own signing on fee.

Dodoo Ron Ron

We signed him on a Monday and our hearts stood still
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Somebody told me that his name was Joe
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

Yes, upwards we started to go
Yes, his name was Joe

And when he walked the ball home
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

Knew what he was doing when he caught Wellens eye
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

He looked so quiet but my oh my
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

Yes, he caught Wellens eye
Yes, oh my, oh my

And when he walked the ball home

Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

He picked the team up and he scored time after time

Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

Someday soon we're going to Wembley
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

Yes, he scores all the time
Yes, his game is fine

And when he walked the ball home

Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

Dodoo -ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron
Dodoo ron-ron-ron, Dodoo ron-ron

That will be good………if he has banged in a dozen or more goals for us.

If Marquis sets a precedent then he’ll still get slated for that!

I do miss the days when people on here (and at the Keepmoat) were rounding on our 20+ goal a season striker.

Absolutely Jonathan.
It always amazed me when people slagged off Marquis.
I wish he was still with us.

What I’ve read Joe is a quick dynamic striker capable of playing off both flanks and do win the middle. Playing 433 the three up front need to be interchangeable think back to MCCann teams we had Sadlier Maquis and Wilks they could play anywhere on the front three. In fact John would spend a lot time out wide when we really wanted him down the middle. So we will have to see how it works out.

I was feeling quite upbeat Steve until you reminded me we had a front three of Sadlier, Marquis and Wilks!

(sigh) Them were the days!

I wonder if this dry spell will make our fans appreciate the next 20-goal striker we have. Somehow I doubt it.

It was beginning to look as though the whole team wouldn’t get to twenty goals this season.

I don't think "it's you Joe Joe Joe" rhymes with "da do ron ron ron" in quite the same way as "it's you John John John".

However, that's just light heartedness. After all my negativity of the last few weeks, I think this is a good signing, and the best of all the free agents out there.

I think that there's a generalisation that there's a reason why players are free agents, that being that no club wants them.

However, that's not the case with Dodoo, as Wigan offered him a new contract.

I was going to make a thread about the TIM role the other day. Look at all our good signings this summer. Are any of them players we were unaware of before even as fans with a passing interest in other teams?

All the permanent signings barring Knoyle I could have said we should look at. And Barlow is known to Wellens from Utd so don’t think that counts.

Fair enough the loanees need some inside knowledge but I just don’t feel we’re getting value for money. And it was the same with Moore we either signed his mates or players who’ve been around ages. Unless the strategy was sign players who have the same agent as the manager.

There is a lot more to scouting, identifying players and signing them than just knowing who a player is.

There is a debate to be had about our recruitment set-up and the role of TIM for sure, but just because I knew who Jordy Hiwula was before we signed him it doesn't mean I've sat and watched him play multiple games, analysed his strengths and weaknesses, or assessed how exactly he'd fit into our team.

The book "The Nowhere Men" by Michael Calvin is an excellent read and all about the different approaches clubs take to their scouting department, for anyone interested in this area.

Wellens will have definitely been the instigator on a number of our summer signings this year, so I wonder who beyond Vilca was a Younger pick. Wellens has previously worked with Knoyle, Smith, Gardner and Dodoo, and he may well know Williams, Galbraith and Barlow from their Man Utd academy pedigree. But I'm sure there was still more due diligence done on our acquisitions. Well, I'd hope there was anyway!
