We lost 1-0 at home to QPR in the Championship on 19 March 2011.
Well we nearly always won at home.

George Best.
He was a Man Utd player at the time so qualifies as an opposition player.
He played for us against the reigning First Division champions, Liverpool, in the John Nicholson Testimonial Match.
If my memory is correct, he scored a couple of goals that day too.

I was there! I remember leaning out of my pram in amazement at Best's skills. I was so impressed that Scawsby Steve and Wolfie pushed me to the front for a better view.

Unknown, just before going off to Italia90.
Not likely.

I was waiting for the Gazza story and the arse moment.

I wasn't there but it seems to have gone down in Rovers lore.

I'll take that as difinitive.

Gazza in his early days was phenomenal

Too many to mention but one player who terrorised all opponents was Robin Friday. Off the scale.

The book about him is a brilliant read

Rovers played an invitation team at BV in somebody's testimonial very roughly about 30 years ago. A young Gazza was one of those invited. Nobody, including me, had ever heard oif him.  Jesus H.....!

And in Aleck Jeffrey's testimonial at BV Bobby Charlton played. He was slightly good too.....

In competitive matches, Kevin Keegan stands out. I don't know how such a dwarf could jump so staggeringly high. An intelligent none stop action man.

BobG

I think you might be remembering that one wrong Bob; it was 1990 and a testimonial against Barnsley. Gaza had been with spurs for 2 seasons at that point. Great penalty he scored if I remember right.

I remember Ferrie Bodde absolutely dominating us for Swansea, he seemed to disappear not long after that but that night he seemed magical.

Talking of Swansea what about Nathan Dyer. Promotion season for both clubs 2008
4-1 to Swansea at the Moat. Nathan Dyer on the right wing gave Gareth Roberts a torrid evening.
Now I can’t ever remember anyone else going past Roberts as often as he did. In fact it was a rare event for anyone to go past Gareth Roberts.

We were good at the time but Swansea were on another level at that time. I think the best we got against them was a nil nil draw.
I was disappointed at the time, not realising they had something special going also.

I remember us being1-0 up against Swansea and Rangel Angel equalising in the last minute to nick a point. I think we would have gone fourth or something like that had we won.

You've forgotten his handball in the leadup to that goal

When John Nicholson was killed in 1966, John Wylie had to stand in at centre half. He did well in a 0-0 draw at Brighton, but we then got murdered 0-4 at home to Darlington.

The Darlo centre forward was Bobby Cummings, who scored a hat trick and gave Wylie a torrid time all night.

Yes his career was completely ruined by injury.

Think he did his cruiciate twice?

Interestingly he came from FC Den Haag (now gone back to their old name ADO den Haag) and where I lived for 30 years. Swansea set up some sort of twin relationship with FC Den Haag, pre season friendlies, exchange of players etc, which worked out well for them. And I am originally from Swansea as well.

I think I can remember a very young David Beckham playing against us whilst on loan at Preston North End.

Think he also played against us for Newcastle, seem to remember him trying to murder Dean Sheils in the NW corner when we played them at home

Wasn't Nicholson killed on the way back from Brighton?

No he was on his way back from Stoke I think.
The story at the time was he went down to collect some rent that he was owed and Alick went with him. I don't know if the rent was for his old house.
He played for Port Vale before us so Stoke is very close to Burslem.

Those Ian Harte corners were unbelievable, in a strange sense a lot of the Rovers supporters enjoyed them due to the ability he showed that night

Conceding a corner or free kick was a dangerous thing to do with Ian Harte in the opposite side. We could do with him as our set piece coach.

And a large amount of drink had been consumed I believe luckily Alick survived
