Let's talk about the Everton game
« on August 26, 2023, 09:17:29 pm by selby »
A big game for the club even though Everton are looking a poor Premiership team they will be hot favourites to beat us easily whatever team they turn out.
What we really need to do is forget all that, it is cup football teams like us can play way above their normal league form in cups and have a go, put them under pressure, they have nothing to win in the game, and give our supporters something to cheer.
Will we make changes? I am not even going to have a guess, but I wouldn't be trying to play out from the back against the pace of a  premiership side, none have slow forwards.
Both managers will be looking for a win to get their season started, both good managers being dealt a poor hand by the looks of it, and will be hoping for a run in one of the cups, But do they prioritise this game?. Both need a change of luck, and the supporters a glimmer of better things to come, but if we cause an upset it wiil cause more commotion than if we lost in the media.
So a big big game for basically the wrong reasons that could have big repercussions especially at Everton, and could cause them undue pressure we might be able to exploit, hopefully a decent crowd, and we don't let ourselves down on TV.
Lot's to discuss about the game, one to look forward to, and will we be the talk of the town come Thursday morning? please have your say.

Everton will put out a reasonably strong team.
All the pressure is on them and Dyche dare not lose this game.

Premier league superstars vs bottom of league 2, on paper it should be a thrashing, and if they get an early goal I suspect it will be.

There is absolutely no pressure or expectation on us for this game, will be interesting to see how that impacts the performance.

I reckon Everton may well play a strong side against Rovers given the poor start they've made .

Possibly only three or four changes in a bid to build some confidence I really don't see wholesale changes .

Tell you what though those Everton fans will be pretty angry right now and I remember when we played them at Oakwell about 8 years ago at this stage of the competition .

We were 2-0 up at half time and they'd a way better team then than they have today and they really got stuck in to their team as they walked past them to the dressing rooms at halftime , pretty toxic stuff to witness .

You never know because this round of the League Cup is a real graveyard for PL clubs especially away from home .

Get yourselves in front and watch those Evertonians turn on their team , it's some spectacle .

All the pressure really is on them .

Tyke, back in 1991 Barnsley were at home to Everton in the FACup.
The MD of Barnsley based company I was then with was a Director of Barnsley FC and I was his Sales Director.
He asked me to invite some customers to the game and when I arrived I went in through the officials entrance.
I had a sheepskin coat on and had reasonably long hair and for some reason a group of young Barnsley fans thought I was Graham Sharpe and came over asking for my autograph.
Of course I obliged.
If I remember correctly the real Graham Sharpe scored the only goal that day.

Everton need a win, in the highlights against Wolves had a few good chances, my guess a strong team to go for a win to give the team a bit of confidence after all it's only TLOD

I checked out their midfield youngsters hopefully Grant has also   there's a hard tackling lad  Djankpata been with them since he was 12 and qualifies for TOGO  so hopefully it might be ok "to go" to Rovers

and the other young midfielder Luke Butterfield was either born in Scotland or Yorkshire depending on which bit of info you believe ( i have accidentally left the gate open with that !)

Remember we get them double bubble in that other competition so we could even pick one up in the January transfer window ?

Dyce is no mug. He'll put a good team out on Wednesday in hope they get a win on the board.

I just hope we play well & save embarrassment.

Difficult one for Everton this.
Lose and it heaps untold pressure on Dyce.
Play a full strength squad risking inquires when their prem season surely has to be their priority. They won’t win it either. Not a chance. So it’s a game they could do without.

Win win for rovers. Bonus game financially for the club in front of a decent crowd plus tv money. No one would expect us to win this. No pressure.
GM is also starting to have an effect I believe.
After watching them at MK, I do think they are turning a corner.
I’ve opted not to make the 150 mile round trip and instead will be watching it on the big screen in Ellenders bar at BUFC. A short walk from my house.

Onana and Doucoure might be gone before the game or not played as both are being linked with moves

I think this is probably a Stoke City, Palace or Bolton cup game. Briefly in the game for a while but then the seniority of the other side tells and we get easily beaten. Will be very pleased if this is not the case!

Would just like to get the game out of the way with no further injuries, if truth be told. Saturday is much more important and another hard game. We desperately need a win.

I haven't seen anything about Evertons Doucoure, do you Palace's Doucoure?

We saw Grimsby win deservedly at St Mary’s last season when Southampton’s position was not unlike Everton’s now.

You might argue that Saints were “concentrating on the league”, but such a loss was the last thing they needed when they still had hope.

So provided we start well, a result is not inconceivable.

Certainly not in competitive games.

Closest we've gone is a 0-0 FA Cup draw vs Aston Villa in 2009, and a 2-2 FA Cup draw against Wolves in 2011, both when we were a Championship side. We lost both replays away from home.

I'm not counting academy/U21 teams in the sham cup either.

What’s our best line up for tomorrow then? Not a clue what happens at right back… maybe put Olowu or Bobby there? Need Bailey in the middle.

Yeah I can see us all fuming leaving the ground, after a victory over a Premier league outfit.
