Let's talk about the Nottingham Forest u21s game
« on December 03, 2023, 11:25:41 am by selby »
After going out of the FA cup against Peterborough somewhat heroically by giving it a right go and just being pipped in what turned out to be a great game of football to watch, we come up against an u21's team who are making their first appearance in the competition after gaining category 1 Academy level last year.
It will be no push over for us them beating Carlisle and Accrington away to reach this stage and pose a goal threat.
The game itself and the competition should now take up more importance in our thinking, being the only competition we now have of saving something from the season to hang on to, the only chance of us doing something in the league dependant on us  having a monumental change in luck, form, and injuries from now right to the end of the season, a massive ask I am sure we will not have given up on but unlikely.
The efforts at Peterborough will have taken a lot out of our best players, but, we need as many as possible to rise to the occasion and go again with the same enthusiasm and effort and show the same determination to get through this tie and hopefully the supporters who were there Saturday will turn up again, and again give the same magnificent support shown on Saturday,
At Peterborough we were one, supporters and the playing staff, something gelled there between the two, and the first time since Charlton pride even though the result was not the way we could have wanted it, but something everyone could feel and were fed on, for a game we all got our club back, we need to build on it, the supporters appreciation of the teams effort shown by the reception they got at the end of the game, we lost, we were not quite good enough, but we gave everything and played well, for most all we ask as supporters.
So this game takes on more than an EFL trophy game for the club, its a test of the supporters and teams coming together and how ambitious the club is. We need a win to back up what we did Saturday, we need a win to keep our season going, we need a win for any prize money to be had, we need a win just to get a win again after playing well in a  couple of good games against tough opposition but never the less two losses, and we need to end that run.
And we need to get behind the team like we did at Peterborough although as ever smaller numbers will be in attendance we need to get behind them.
Forest will not be a push over, and being new this season to the competition will have more ambitions to do well than probably other clubs have who are regular entrants, we need to go for it big style and prioritise this competition with our league position and take it just as seriously, what do you think? lots to discuss, lots to gain if we win, what do you think? please have your say.

Grant said in his after match interview yesterday that there would be changes for Tuesday to freshen up the side. Would guess Hurst will start for one.

I am just hoping not too many CBcb, the fact is lose this and it will have repercussions on the season, and possibly the money available for the January transfer window
They have beaten two good sides away from home in Accrington and Carlisle, and most of the fringe youngsters in our team such as Kuleya would get nowhere near their academy at u21s level, plus they can play overage players, and we would be weakening our chance of winning the tie.
We need to go as strong as possible and get through the round it will not be easy.

Having not followed this competition closely for quite a while, I was wondering when we last got to the knockout stage and also what is the furthest we have gone in the competition since we won it.
Does anyone on here know?

I think in honesty we still can’t make too many changes particularly at the back now Wood and Senior are injured.
Faal going off should present a chance for Goodman but would like to see Hurst stretch himself too
Is it 5 starting from the previous game we have to pick ?

Not much we can do re defence but I'd put in Goodman, Kuleya, Degruchy with Hurst, Biggins and Rowe

As I have said, in all honesty DBR the first three on your list would struggle to get into a level 1 academy at u21s, they have been watched nearly every game from 14yrs old and never been approached to go to that level, and could be the difference of getting through to the next round.
My way would be as strong a starting team as possible, and if we have the game tied up blood a couple near the end.
This us a big game for the club.

I think we should be aiming for a decent run in this Cup, just in case the league season fizzles out.
More money in the coffers and it would generate a lot interest for next season.

I just don't think GM will risk the forthcoming league fixtures with key players for this one, given we're teetering on having another long injury list. Yes, have them on the bench to come on if needs be.

DBR, if you are serious about a game you start strong and bring players on if the situation allows.
It should not be lost on us we have lost the last two fixtures, and we need a win before it becomes a habit again.
We need a win as much as anything just to get back on track, its all right losing well, we just have the last two games, you get nothing for it, and the less committed supporters soon get tired of it and that costs money.
We need a win, and the best way of obtaining one is to play our strongest side IMHO.

Would make a few changes to Freshen the side up and give more minutes to the returning players like Hurst and Rowe and rest a couple of the players who have played a lot recently (mainly Anderson). Would definitely go strong enough to win the game and get through. May also see Lawlor come into the side for this game aswell. Wouldn’t be surprised if we went with a back 4 with injuries to Wood and Senior and Anderson likely to be rested.

Lawlor

Nixon Bailey Olowu Maxwell

Biggins Broadbent Rowe

Roberts Ironside Hurst

Could possibly start with Goodman if we do go with a back 3 but think he will go with Ironside for 60/70. Possibly last chance for Roberts to impress before January.

Just asked a lad I know who is a Forest fan who the ones to watch out for tomorrow are and he’s said:

Zach Abbott and Ben Hammond (both Centre halves, Hammond has been in and around the first team a bit).

Julian Larsson seems to be the main threat (scored 18 in 15 this season apparently). There’s also a Costa Rican lad called Brandon Aguilera who is eligible to play but don’t think he played in any of the group games. He’s supposed to be very good.

Had a look at their teams for the group games and noticed that in the game against Harrogate which they lost in they had Felipe (Brazilian Centre half) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (ex Chelsea) playing.

Asked him if there were any first team players coming back from injuries who may feature and he said Felipe could possibly play.

From Wiki "Callum James Hudson-Odoi (born 7 November 2000)". So he can play for Forest U21s! Surely this should be a competition in which U21 means U21. The principle is surely founded in giving these young players experience of playing against football adults. Where does the power of the PL end???

Over 20 minutes in, nothing happened.
Their number 48 Konate looks dangerous

Flint is looking pretty good but otherwise we can’t put any passes together and look lightweight up front. They are more fluent but rarely threaten.
